In the Palace’s yard are important works painted by Asturian and Spanish painters from the end of 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. What grabs your attention about this collection is the great painting “Después de una huelga” painted by the asturian José Uría, with an important social message. One of the rooms joined to the yard is dedicated to the asturian painter José Ramón Zaragoza. There, one can admire the work “Mito de Prometeo” belonging to the impresionist stream of art work. In this low room one can also find the temporary expositions room of the museum and the relaxation room designed for visitors. Through this room one can reach the colourful garden, where some comtemporary sculptures are situated.

Works until the nineteenth century

On the first floor of the palace different works spanning from the Medieval times to the 19th century are on display.

Space has been designated for the works of the Flemish- Renaissance. What is remarkable in this room is the triptych work of D. Alvaro de Carreño made in 1520. Other important works correspond to different female figures made by Jan Van Domicke, Ambrosious Benson and Marcelus Coffermans.

These serve to emphasise the “Retablo de los Santos Juanes” made by the Master Cubells of the catalonian school, and the “Retablo de la Virgen y Santos” of the Master Rafael Moger. In addition to these important works are also the remarkable hispano- flemish works by Jaime Huguet representative of the catalonian style and Fernando Gallego, the most famous painter of the ancient style, in the Castilian- leonés reign.

Other significant works in this exposition are the baroque examples of Rubens and the great “Florero” by Jan Brueghel de Velours.

In the galleries of this palace many works of the Spanish and European schools of the 17th and 18th centuries can be found. Vases of Arellano and Yepes of the middle of 15th centuy are kept here and the famous paintings of Miguel Jacinto Meléndez, the private painter of the king Felipe V. Other well known works by this famous painter are the portrait of the Marqués de Vadillo and the portrait of Inmaculada Concepción. The nephew of this famous painter, Luis Meléndez, was one of the most important Spanish painters of the 18th century, despite the fact that his works only consist of 7 still-life paintings and a portrait.

Works by Asturian painters

In the second floor of this palace there is a beautiful gallery facing the yard, where one can find the work of two of the most popular Asturian painters: Evaristo Valle and Nicanor Piñole. The whole of Valle’s work is compiled of 36 oil paintings, two watercolours and one drawing, and Piñole’s work consits of 36 oil paintings, 39 works on paper and some watercolours. Valle’s work deals with the post-impressionist stream in which he demostrates great skills through his personal vision of the Asturian towns and lands. Piñole’s work also contributes to the modernization of Asturian Art.

Works of the nineteenth century

There are in this palace Valencian works of the 19th century, with the inclusion of nine oil paintings by Joaquín Sorolla one of which being the famous “Transportando la uva” and also “ Corriendo por la playa”. The palace also contains some works of Ignacio Piñazo, Navarro Llorens and José Mongrell. Other famous works are” Campesinos de Gandìa” by Anglada Camarasa, “Autorretrato” of Darío de Regollos, and varions works by Santiago Rusiñol, Ricardo Baroja, Sotomayor, Manuel Benedito, Eduardo Chicharro, Julio Romero de Torres and Joaquín Mir.

It is important to mention the splendid collection of glass and pottery consisting of more than 2.500 pieces. All types of Spanish art from 19th and 20th centuries are represented in practical manner here, as well as certain other elements drawn from Germany, Belgium, France, England and Portugal.
