These facts ensure that it deserves the means granted by the government and the materials used needed for the protection of this unvaluable habitat.

This area covers over 376,2 square kilometres. It is characterised by its relief of high and low mountains, its limestone, the Atlantic forest and meadows in its valleys. The minimum height above sea level reaches 400 m and the highest peak, The Picu Torres reaches 2,104 metres.

This land is very mountainous and this serves to explain why 80% of the area is above the height of 800 metres. 30% of this 80% is characterised by a great slope. These features ensure a more natural environment thanks to the fact that it remains untouched by man. The natural resources also remain untouched.

From this park the River Nalón begins flowing into the Port of Tarna, a historical passage between the meseta and the Asturian lands.

The environmental richness of this park is shown in its views and landscapes. One can observe formations of glacial origin, caves, vast pastures, woods and deep forests. The town of Redes includes a deep forest which covers 40% of the territory.

In the park of Redes, all the native species go from place to place throughout the Northern peninsular. Bears and wolves can reproduce freely in this area. One of the most crowded populations of chamoises exists in this region. The capercaillie, the golden eagle and a lot of birds, reptiles and amphibians enjoy the good state of this park.

Beech is the predominant forestation in Redes, although we can find other important forests such as oakwoods. The erosion caused by rivers favours the presence of open valleys which form lowlands or the great gorges of limestone, such as the river Alba or that of Arrudos.

The options for walking are unlimited, but we can enjoy more routes more comfortably driving by car up to the dam of Tanes and taking time to relax in the recreational area of the Cave Devoyu.

The best choice for visiting the most beautiful places is to visit the Interpretation Centre of the Park located in the capital of the council of Caso, Campo de Caso.

Another interesting place to visit is The Wood Museum in Veneros, as well as the Workshop of la Madreña in Pendones. Both of them are good choices to make the most of your visit.

There are also a lot of hotels and restaurants in which we can enjoy local food of the highest quality. In Caso Casín cheese is made, whose delicious taste is comparable to the sensory stimulation only given by this kind of wonderful landscape.

The route of Alba.

This route starts in the village of Soto of Agues, next to the ancient laundrette of this village. A path takes us through meadows and a fish farm up to an old mineral loader. We walk next to a fountain and approach a cross with huts. The road ends here in a junction of different paths which form a cross. We must go straight up to the gorge. This path is easy to walk and we can finish the journey in one hour. After crossing two bridges, we find a slope which ends in “Cruz de los Ríos” a place where the waters descending from Pico La Forcada and Retriñon mix. One last bridge separates us from the Vega of Llaímo. The return journey is made by reversing this itinerary.
